The environmental decision on Baltic Pipe landfall in Denmark issued

On July 12, 2019, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Danish EPA) issued two environmental decisions related to the location of the onshore part of the Baltic Pipe in Denmark – one for Gaz-System S.A. and the other one for the Danish gas and energy transmission system operator – Energinet.

The decision for Gaz-System covers the construction of a connection between the submarine gas pipeline on the bottom of the Baltic Sea and the gas transmission network under the responsibility of Energinet. The permit also covers the construction of a microtunnel to the shoreline where the pipeline will be installed. The use of micro-tunneling technology will reduce the environmental impact and the pipeline will not disturb the Danish beach and cliff.

– The process of obtaining permits is proceeding according to the assumed schedule. Another milestone is behind us. The next important stage is to obtain a building permit – says Tomasz Stępień, the President of Gaz-System.

The Danish EPA consent was necessary for the operators, Gaz-System and Energinet.dk, to start the construction of the gas pipeline. Before the environmental decision was issued, the project assumptions were consulted with the Danish public during the second phase of public consultations.

The Baltic Pipe is a strategic infrastructure project, with the goal of creating a new gas supply corridor on the European market. For the first time, it will be possible to transport gas from fields in Norway to the Danish and Polish markets, as well as to customers in neighbouring countries. Once implemented, the project will enhance energy security in Poland and in the entire CEE region and increase the competitiveness of the Polish gas market.

The Baltic Pipe will enable the transportation of 10 billion m3/year gas from Norway to Denmark and Poland and 3 billion m3/year gas from Poland to Denmark. The construction of the sea-bed section of the Baltic Pipe will begin in 2020. The gas transmission will start in October 2022.

Baltic Pipe is a project implemented in close cooperation between Gaz-System, a Polish gas transmission operator, and Energinet, a Danish transmission system operator for gas and electricity.
