Czaputowicz: Poland does not want Gazprom’s price dictate

Poland diversifies gas supplies in order not to be dependent on the Gazprom dictate. In an interview with the TASS agency, Jacek Czaputowicz, the Polish minister of foreign affairs, argues that for this purpose Poland is investing in the construction of the Baltic Pipe pipeline and LNG facilites.

– Indeed, our policy is focused on becoming independent from Russian gas supplies. This is due to the fact that Russia is trying to use gas for geopolitical pressure. In our opinion, the gas market should be competitive, which is why we invest in LNG and construction of a gas pipeline from Norway through Denmark (Baltic Pipe – ed.) – said the Foreign Minister.

Czaputowicz noted that Gazprom’s monopoly gives Russians the option of imposing higher gas prices than market prices. He reminded that during the last visit to the United States of President Andrzej Duda, another long-term contract for the supply of American LNG was signed. – Its price is lower than the price of gas supplied from Russia – said the head of Polish diplomacy.

It is about the agreement between PGNiG and Venture Global LNG, thanks to which the Polish company will increase the purchase of LNG from the United States by 2 billion cubic meters. As a result, from 2022, PGNiG will be able to receive approximately 9,4 billion cubic meters of gas from the United States. It is almost as much as at the moment Poland imports from Russia under the Yamal contract, which was in force until the end of 2022.
