European Commission.

To improve the functioning of the EU internal energy market and enhance solidarity between Member States, the Commission today proposed to amend the EU Gas Directive. It includes common rules for gas pipelines entering the European internal gas market, which can help to stop the Nord Stream 2 project.

The European Commission asked the Member States in July for a mandate to talk to Russia about the legal regime for the Nord Stream 2 project. Russians do not want to negotiate. The Commission has an alternative plan, i.e. the new law. It may jeopardize implementation of the investment.

The European Commission fined the Lithuanian Railways EUR 28 m for removing a rail track to PKN Orlen’s refinery in Mažeikiai and thus breaching the EU antitrust rules. According to Marek Zuber, an economist, Brussels made the right decision.
