The Ministry of Climate and Environment announced a decision-in-principle on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Pątnów using Korean technology.

The Climate Ministry told the Polish Press Agency that it issued the decision at the request of PGE PAK Energia Jądrowa, a special purpose vehicle establised by the state-owned PGE, and private company PAK for talks with the Korean KHNP. Previously the same decision was issued for the American companies building Poland’s first large-scale NPP in Pomerania and for NuScale’s SMR build for the state-owned KGHM.

„The decision in principle made by the Climate Ministry is crucial for the construction of the nuclear power plant and allows us to move on to the next stages of the investment. We received it less than 13 months after signing the letter of intent. For such a large investment, this is a very good result. It is also proof of the commitment and good cooperation of all partners in the project and confirmation that the ambitious plan to launch the first unit of the power plant by 2035 is very real. The power plant will provide consumers with cheap and clean energy, and Poland, together with renewable energy sources, with energy security and independence,” commented Wojciech Dąbrowski, president of PGE.

Such a decision is an expression of political support. The project provides for the construction of two to four APR1400 reactors in Pątnów. Studies are underway to determine the potential location of the facility, whose first reactor could launch in 2035.
