Korea’s KHNP has visited Konin where an APR1400 NPP may be built thanks to cooperation with PGE and ZE PAK. A feasibility study contract is being negotiated.

KHNP is talking about setting up a company with PGE PAK Energia Jądrowa created by PGE and PAK in 2023 in order to prepare a decision on the construction of the NPP in Konin. „A seminar to present the investment was organized, and the participants included Insik Park, the Executive VP of KHNP responsible for international development, Hoonmin Lim, the Korean Ambassador to Poland, Tomasz Nowak an MP from the Konin constituency and Piotr Korytkowski, President of Konin,” KHNP said in a press release.

„After concluding a letter of intent with PGE and PAK in October 2022, KHNP has been constantly working with the project partner (PGE PAK Nuclear Energy) to build two ARP1400 reactors at the Pątnów site in Konin. In November last year, the project to build a nuclear power plant in the Konin region received a decision-in-principle from the Polish government, which was an important impetus for its further development. At the moment, PGE PAK Energia Jądrowa is in talks to conclude a contract to carry out a feasibility study,” the statement continues.

Poland want to build its first NPP in Pomerania using Westinghouse’s technology. The American provider and KHNP are in a dispute over who controls the Korean company’s technology. The Koreans reject the American accusations. The new government in Poland has not yet decided on the future of the nuclear project in Konin. Preparations are underway to change the management board of Polska Grupa Energetyczna.
