Gajęcka: Poland sees the potential of renewable energy sources

Central and Eastern Europe is greener than Brussels may think – says Marta Gajęcka, vice-president of Polish Electric Energy Committee.

Poland is the 7th wind market in the European Union now and one of the leaders in the rate of development of wind power generation in the EU. We noted more than 100% growth of installed capacity and reached the level of 5,8 GW of wind power during last few years – she says.

– Potential of wind energy is still considered in Poland. Significant offshore projects are currently in development phase. The overall RES share in Polish electricity capacity is up from 4% to 21% during 2008-2016 period. Poland continues to diversify and modernize its energy sector rapidly. However, due to technical reasons RES still needs to be backed up by conventional sources. Legislative framework for further RES development in Europe needs to take into account different starting points for energy transition. EU legislative framework should guarantee stable, secure and affordable energy – she adds.
