MFA’s exposé: Poland will keep resisting Nord Stream 2. LNG and Baltic Pipe will give independence

Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz has appeared in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland to present an annual summary of foreign policy called „expose.” He spoke about Nord Stream 2, the Baltic Pipe and the LNG terminal in Świnoujście.

– Ensuring Poland’s energy security can only be achieved by becoming independent from Russian gas supplies. We are consistently opposed to the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project and we support the critical position of the European Commission in this matter. The purpose of the revision of the gas directive is to extend the gas pipeline from third countries to European Union law. In 2018, we have built a coalition of several countries, which resulted in agreeing on the text of the revision of the directive, which will make it difficult for Gazprom to use its privileged position on the European market. This does not change our negative assessment of Nord Stream 2 – said the minister. – We are different to the Nord Stream 2 project which, in our opinion, does not contribute to the energy security of the European Union – admitted Czaputowicz speaking about relations with Germany.

– The key project for the security of supply of the region is the construction of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline connecting Poland through Denmark and then Norway with gas deposits in the North Sea. In December 2018, a bilateral agreement was signed regulating the legal framework for the gas pipeline. After its completion in October 2022, Baltic Pipe together with the LNG terminal in Świnoujście will provide Poland with real energy independence and allow support for countries in our region in this area. We have signed an agreement with Denmark on the delimitation of the sea border for the construction of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, which will enable the transmission of gas from Norwegian resources – the author of the expose reminded.
