The Management Board of PGNiG SA welcomed the approval of the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for the construction of the Port Arthur liquefaction terminal in Jefferson County, Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico, which is due to start operating in 2023.
In 2018, PGNiG signed a contract for the purchase of 2 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from Port Arthur LNG, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, starting from 2023. According to the management of Sempra North American Infrastructure, the FERC authorization is one of the last major regulatory approvals needed before final investment decision.
“Progress in the development of US LNG liquefaction and export projects, including the acquisition of regulatory approvals by their operators, are closely monitored by PGNiG. We congratulate our American partners and we are satisfied that the project is on schedule. Earlier, FERC had granted its approval for one of the projects developed by Venture Global LNG, another US company we have also signed long-term contracts with. Both decisions bring us closer to the commencement of contracts for the purchase of LNG in 2022 and 2023,” commented Piotr Woźniak, President of the PGNiG Management Board.
The Port Arthur LNG project is expected to include two liquefaction trains, up to three LNG storage tanks and associated facilities that will enable the export of approximately 11 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of LNG.
