Lithuania has prepared a plan for grid synchronization
The Ministry of Energy of Lithuania has developed a plan of measures to carry out the process of synchronizing the power grids of the Baltic States with the continental Europe system. This is one of the requirements of the synchronization act adopted in June by the Lithuanian parliament.
– The plan will ensure efficient, responsible and timely performance of all works, so that the Lithuanian electricity system would be prepared to work in synchronization with the continental Europe system – said Žygimantas Vaičiūnas, Lithuanian Minister of Energy.
One of the most important parts of the plan is the preparation of an appropriate transmission infrastructure. It indicates the most important investments and start-up dates: the development of the LitPol Link connection, buidling the Harmony Link cable, optimization of the transmission network in the north-eastern part of Lithuania and other work related to improving the network operation. The document also includes measures that will enable the synchronization conditions approved in May by the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E).
Until 2021, transmission system operators of Lithuania, Poland and Sweden should reach an agreement on cooperation in the case of a system operation in isolated mode. In turn, by 2024, operators in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia should create a joint entity to manage networks.
The implementation of the plan will be supervised by the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy. Its implementation is to take place in cooperation with the Baltic States, North European countries and the European Commission.
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia want to complete the synchronization process by 2025. According to the adopted scenario, it will be carried out using the existing LitPol Link connection and a new maritime cable between Poland and Lithuania, called Harmony Link.
