Workshops on the role of natural gas infrastructure in achieving the European Union’s climate and energy policy objectives were held on the initiative of Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) on September 17, 2019.
The workshops were attended by representatives of about 20 natural gas infrastructure operators from EU Member States, including GAZ-SYSTEM representatives.
During the workshops, operators presented their strategies and plans to expand their gas infrastructure, which are aimed at achieving the EU’s energy and climate policy objectives. The discussion on the search for optimal solutions in the long term was also focused on the importance of innovative technologies and the potential of renewable gases.
– Natural gas is a source of energy that can be used efficiently for the purposes of energy transition. The demand for gas in Poland is growing. GAZ-SYSTEM has been increasing its availability by developing national infrastructure such as the North-South Corridor and the Baltic Pipe. The workshop organized today as part of GIE demonstrates active approach of transmission system operators towards the EU climate change policy – said Tomasz Stępień, President of GAZ-SYSTEM.
One way to reduce pollution emissions could be to use natural gas more widely in the electricity, district heating, industry or land and maritime transport. Natural gas can also play an important role in solving the „low emission” problem, which results from the combustion of low-energy fuels.
A well-developed gas infrastructure makes it possible to implement the European Union’s climate and energy policy objectives, hence allowing access to natural gas as a low-carbon energy source in many sectors of the economy. This is particularly true for Central and Eastern Europe, where significant reductions in emissions in the long term can be achieved by switching from high-carbon to low-carbon energy sources.
Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE) is an association representing the interests of natural gas infrastructure operators in Brussels. The organization brings together gas transmission network operators, underground gas storage operators and LNG operators. In GIE there are currently 68 members from 25 European countries. GAZ-SYSTEM has been a member of GIE since its establishment in 2005.
The association makes the voice of its members heard by the European institutions, regulators and other stakeholders. The organization’s mission is to actively contribute to the construction of a single, sustainable and competitive gas market in Europe, based on a stable and predictable regulatory framework and the development of a favorable investment climate.
