What goes on in Poland on the 28th of January.

Another Chernobyl in Poland?

BiznesAlert.com acquired a scientific report on the risks of a Polish nuclear project commissioned by Germany’s Greens. It is a warning against another Chernobyl-like disaster.

The document is titled „Modeling of a Hypothetical Major Nuclear Accident in Poland from 1 096 Meteorological Situations and Analysis of Transboundary Environmental Impacts for European Countries and Their Inhabitants” and was written by Piguet Frederic-Paul, Eckert Pierre, Knusli Claudio, Helder Peixoto and Giuliani Gregory.

The conclusions are that a possible nuclear incident in Pomerania’s nuclear power plant, which could be built in 2033, could impact over 860 thousand European citizens, mostly outside Poland, and force some of them to relocate for safety reasons.

A Nord Stream 2 deal?

According to BiznesAlert.com sources, Germany is probing if Poland would agree to Nord Stream 2 in exchange for a helping hand in other matters. Poland is a harsh critic of the Nord Stream 2 project, a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Warsaw is calling for further U.S. sanctions and a blockade of NS2 by European Union.

Theoretically, Poles could give up on their opposition towards Nord Stream 2 in exchange for Germany’s support in talks with the European Commission on the EU climate policy, or the dispute over the rule of law. In practice it is hard to expect Poland to stop opposing Nord Stream 2 because this project is perceived as a threat to energy security, hard security, gas market development in Central and Eastern Europe and the common European energy policy.
