What goes on in Poland on the 20th of August.

Another round of negotiations on Turów has ended

Another round of talks regarding the Polish Turów mine has ended in Prague. The Polish and Czech delegations met for the tenth time to discuss the contents of the intergovernmental agreement regulating issues related to mining in the facility. Its signing is to end the dispute and – as a consequence – withdraw the lawsuit against Poland, which the Czech side has filed with the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Both sides of the dispute over Turów have still not reached an agreement. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Paweł Jabłoński said that the final of the negotiations is getting closer, but he did not give a possible date for the end of the talks. „The main issue that remains to be agreed on is a number of technical matters discussed by experts,” the deputy minister told the Polish Radio. „We will continue these talks. We are getting closer and closer to the final, but there are still a lot of issues to be discussed,” Jabłoński added. Another round of talks at the Czech Ministry of Environment is scheduled for next Thursday. Polish and Czech delegations have been meeting regularly since mid-June.

Tusk: Climate and environmental protection issues should be on the national agenda

„The issue of environmental protection requires not only extraordinary competences, but also extraordinary measures. We will not be able to go beyond the sphere of slogans and promises regarding climate protection, if we do not undertake advanced cooperation with farmers,” said the former prime minister and president of the Civic Platform (PO) Donald Tusk at a press conference.

„Reports of scientists from around the world leave no doubts not only about what people see and feel all over Poland, that the climate is changing with dramatic consequences, but that human activity also has a direct impact on it. It is our responsibility to do everything we can to avoid the climate catastrophe that is already in the perspective of the generation of our children and grandchildren. (…) The issue of environmental protection requires not only extraordinary competences, but also extraordinary measures,” Tusk said.
