The Director General for Environmental Protection has initiated proceedings for an environmental decision for the construction of small modular nuclear reactors in Ostrołęka. This is a necessary step in preparations for the construction of small nuclear reactors in Poland.

Every highway needs multiple lanes to travel quickly and safely. It is no different with the energy mix, which can be based on renewable energy sources, but needs to be supported with nuclear power. The Minister of State Assets Jacek Sasin announced that the National Energy Security Agency, which will take over the coal assets of Polska Grupa Energetyczna, Tauron, Enea and Energa, will be established in the autumn of this year. This date has been already changed a few times.

The Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastrcuture is not expecting that the construction of Poland’s first NPP in Pomerania will be delayed. „At this point I see no risk,” the Plenipotentiary said during a press conference on protecting critical energy infrastrcuture.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala confirmed that Poland was implementing the provisions of the agreement on the Turów mine. This is a response to claims by geologists that there are irregularities in the construction of the underground wall built to retain groundwaters. This is one of the measures stipulated in the agreement.

The Ministry of State Assets (MAP) reported that financial institutions confirmed their intention to finance the National Energy Security Agency. It notes, however, that limiting the financing of entities holding coal assets requires covering financial obligations with guarantees from the state treasury and a corresponding change in the law.

After last year’s preparations, which included selecting the technology for Poland’s first NPP and choosing the location for small reactors, the time has come to face the red tape. Reactors are not built without meeting environmental and safety standards, and these are verified by the relevant administrative bodies.

Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska, Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, appeared for the first time in her new role. She has confirmed that Poland would continue to invest in nuclear energy and stabilization of the electricity system. She also promised more news about the atom in the fall.

„Gazprom’s lobbying is making it difficult to increase EU support. We need to talk about the idea of energy storage, so that in the future this industry can develop dynamically. This will strengthen Poland’s energy security,” said Wojciech Dąbrowski, president of Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE).
