The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ontario has announced the possibility of Poland and Canada signing a deal on nuclear energy. Canadians want more small modular reactors at home and are working with Poles.

“With the direct support of Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as Climate Minister Anna Moskwa and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, we are finishing up the wording of our nuclear cooperation agreement. We hope that this Polish-Canadian agreement will be finished in early fall,” said Ambassador Witold Dzielski during an event in Ontario.

Ontario Power Generation is planning to build four small SMR reactors using GE’s Hitachi BWRX-300 technology. That’s three more than the original plan. These additional reactors are expected to start working between 2034 and 2036. However, the first one is to be ready in 2028.

The BWRX-300 reactors will also be built in Poland. Orlen Synthos Green Energy, which is hoping that Poland’s first SMR will be built by 2029, sent company representatives to the event in Ontario. OSGE has a partnership agreement with Ontario Power Generation and the Tennessee Valley Authority to develop SMR technology.
