Minister of Foreign Affairs Jacek Czaputowicz presented the assumptions of Polish foreign policy in 2018. In the expose, the minister mentioned, among others, Ukraine and Nord Stream 2.
NATO, European Union and Ukraine
In the Sejm speech, the minister said that the position of Poland in the world depends on its position in Europe. He emphasized the importance of NATO and its extension for the security of his country. He also spoke about the security and stability of Ukraine as the foundation of security in the region in which Poland is located.
Nord Stream 2 and the problem of Russia
– We believe that the Nord Stream 2 project poses a threat to the energy security of the entire region, as well as to the common EU energy market – said Czaputowicz about the disputed draft gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, which is criticized by Poland, the Baltic States, Ukraine and Moldova, Scandinavian countries and the European Commission.
– With the Baltic states – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – we share a similar perception of the nature of threats, convergence of interests with respect to the European Union, common energy and infrastructure interests – emphasized the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland. – We believe that the basis for solving problems in relations with the Russian Federation must be realities in the field of military security, transport and communication issues and energy – he added.
– We demonstrated energy solidarity in the face of Gazprom’s decision to cut off gas supplies to Ukraine, supplying this material via a node in Hermanowice – Czaputowicz reminded. – We will also work on the further development of dialogue with Armenia and Azerbaijan. The countries of the Southern Caucasus are on the strategic transport route of energy resources – declared the minister.
COP 24 climate summit in Poland
There was also an accent of climate policy. – This year Poland will be the host of the world’s largest climate conference – COP24 for the third time. We undertake this task in the spirit of co-responsibility for searching for solutions to the climate problems of the globe. 20 thousand Delegates from all over the world will come to Katowice, which will be an opportunity to show Silesia and the whole of Poland as an open and modern country that cultivates historical and natural heritage. It will also be an opportunity to promote Polish solutions and innovative technologies in the field of energy consumption and emissions – said Czaputowicz.
