Timmermans: The energy transition is not an ideology but a direction in which the world is going

– It’s been 10 months since we presented the European Green Deal. It is a commitment to make it a socially just transformation. It cannot take place without the approval of the citizens. We want to be the first climate neutral continent, which is why Europe is the best place for sustainable business in the world, said Frans Timmermans, Vice-President of the European Commission for the European Green Deal at the 2020 European Economic Congress.

The Vice-President admitted that the European Green Deal is based on the Just Transition Mechanism. – It must include areas such as Silesia, we must ensure that all coal regions are prepared for transition. There is no turning back from this process, so we want to introduce the Climate Law. Hydrogen should play the most important role in this process. In the European Union, we want 6 GW of capacity in renewable sources to be created by 2024, which will be used to produce hydrogen, by 2030 this capacity will increase to 40 GW – he said.

Timmermans pointed out that Poland has great potential for the development of hydrogen, biogas and offshore wind energy. – Poland may become a leader on a European scale. Later this year, we want to introduce a roadmap for the development of offshore wind energy to facilitate investments in this area. We will also present a plan to increase our climate ambitions by 2030, which will also include solar energy. We will have to consider how to reform the European emissions trading system and the strategy for renewable energy and energy efficiency, he admitted.
