GAZ-SYSTEM and PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna have signed a contract to connect the Dolna Odra Power Plant to the gas network. This will ensure that the newly erected combined gas and steam units will be fired by gas from the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście in the future. The project includes the construction of ca. 63 km-long pipeline and a gas station.
This project is a response to the growing demand for generation capacity in the region’s energy system. The delivery of both interrelated projects, i.e. the erection of combined gas and steam units and the connector gas pipeline, is of strategic importance for Poland’s energy security. With this advanced technology, the National Power System will have power from low-emission power generation units with an emission factor of 550 kg/MWh, in line with the provisions of the European Union’s Winter Package. The commissioning of the two new gas-fired power units with a total output of ca. 1,400 MW is scheduled for Q4 2023.
“GAZ-SYSTEM is expanding the national transmission system to accommodate the economy’s growing demand for low-emission energy sources. Acting in agreement with Polish power companies, the Company is planning the connection processes so as to ensure their timely completion,” said Artur Zawartko, Vice-President of the Management Board, GAZ-SYSTEM.
“The implementation of the project will significantly contribute to meeting the EU’s climate goals and aligns with the global trends in the energy sector, which favour low-emission power generation units, thus offering a perfect fit with the PGE Group’s strategic direction. The proposed advanced generation units stand a prospect of receiving long-term support through the Capacity Market mechanism. This will be made possible notably by meeting the requirements of the BAT conclusions and the emission factor below 550 kg CO2/MWh as required by the European Union,” says Robert Ostrowski, President of the Management Board, PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna.
The pipeline will connect the Dolna Odra Power Plant to the existing gas infrastructure of GAZ-SYSTEM. Natural gas will be supplied from the LNG Terminal in Świnoujście through the existing Szczecin–Lwówek pipeline and the proposed Goleniów–Lwówek section intended to be part of the Baltic Pipe project.
A connector pipeline having a diameter of DN 700 mm and MOP of 8.4 MPa will run across the West Pomerania Province crossing the communes of Przelewice, Pyrzyce, Kozielice, Banie, Gryfino and Widuchowa. The project includes the construction of a gas pipeline with a connection system to the shut-off and relief valve systems of the existing DN 700 MOP 8.4 MPa Szczecin–Lwówek pipeline and the planned DN 1000 MOP 8.4 MPa pipeline between Goleniów and Lwówek in Przywodzie. A gas station with a capacity of 250,000 m3/h will also be erected for the purposes of the connection.
The project will be implemented pursuant to the Act of 24 April 2009 on Investment Projects Related to the Świnoujście Liquefied Natural Gas Regasification Terminal. The contractor responsible for the design documentation is PGNiG Gazoprojekt S.A.
