Grądzik: Further reductions reveal that Poland doesn’t have an excess of renewable energy sources, but is missing tools

Yet again the grid operator recommended to reduce the output from green energy sources in Poland. “With an energy mix so dominated by coal we should not be talking about a “surplus” of renewable energy. Instead, we should look for solutions that will help us manage energy surpluses,” says Paulina Grądzik, expert on energy and legislation at the Department of Energy and Climate Change in the Polish Lewiatan Confederation.

On March 10, PSE (Poland’s grid operator – ed.) had to once again introduce restrictions on PVs in order to protect the safe operation of the system. “Due to the generation oversupply in the national energy system (KSE) and the need to restore the regulatory capacity of KSE, PSE is introducing a non – market generation reduction,” PSE said in a statement.

Manufacturers will receive compensation, but the problem is recurring increasingly more frequently.

“With such a coal-dominated energy mix, we should not talk about “excess” energy from RES. Instead, we should look for solutions that will help us manage energy surpluses,” says Paulina Grądzik, expert on energy and legislation of the Department of Energy and Climate Change in the Polish Lewiatan Confederation.

“This is absolutely not an attack on the operator, but a request to the government,” Grądzik said. “We need comprehensive mechanisms to get out of this type of a situation without causing such huge losses of green energy. Of course, we understand partial losses will take place, however, such significant reductions in March do not inspire optimism for the coming months,” she bemoaned.

“In this situation, it is necessary first of all to develop the energy storage sector and manage the demand more efficiently,” the expert told BiznesAlert.pl.
