Germany and Russia are talking about Nord Stream 2. US sanctions on the horizon

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev met with Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the Europe-Asia summit (ASEM). He told reporters that one of the topics of the conversation was the Nord Stream 2 project.

Conversations during ASEM

– We talked about different things. Let’s be honest that Nord Stream was obviously discussed as well as all statements about the North Stream – said Medvedev. Merkel’s adviser on transatlantic politics, Peter Beyer, admitted in media interviews that it is possible to impose US sanctions on Nord Stream 2 project participants. This could happen in November or early in the next year.

US sanctions on the horizon

German companies – BASF / Wintershall and E.on / Uniper are financially involved in the disputed draft Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany. The Dutch-British Shell acknowledged that if sanctions were imposed, the US could be forced to withdraw financial support for the project. The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, assured that eventually the Russians can finance the construction themselves.
