Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska, Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, appeared for the first time in her new role. She has confirmed that Poland would continue to invest in nuclear energy and stabilization of the electricity system. She also promised more news about the atom in the fall.
Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska, the new Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, delivered an exposé during the National Energy Summit in Gdańsk. She mentioned her experience at the Ministry of Climate and Environment, where one of her jobs was to support Ukraine in rebuilding its critical infrastructure.
„Due to the attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure during the fall and winter, Ukrainians needed help in rebuilding it. I’ve done this before and the work I’m starting now is really a continuation of what I was doing at the Ministry of Climate and the environment,” Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska said.
The plenipotentiary stressed that Poland was constantly striving for an energy transition, which is to be founded on nuclear energy and the stabilization of the National Power System.
„The energy transition is ongoing, the energy mix is changing and Poland is doing it effectively. The first priority is to adapt the grid so that it is capable of receiving power, so that we do not have to reduce it,” she explained. „The investment in a nuclear power plant in Pomerania is the future of Poland. The same is true for modular nuclear reactors, or SMRs. We are currently implementing a schedule for the large atom project to a T. All parties are doing what is planned. We will report on progress in the fall, but I can assure you that we are working according to plan, ” she said during the 2023 OSE, announcing that ” in the fall” there may be new decisions on this issue.
The first nuclear power plant in Poland is to be built in Pomerania. The facility is the result of a partnership with Westinghouse, which will supply the AP1000 reactors. According to the announcement, the unit is expected to be ready for operation in 2033 and provide 6-9 GW. One of the milestones of this cooperation is the project agreement between Polish Nuclear Power Plants, Bechtel and Westinghouse on the terms of cooperation, which was originally planned for the beginning of 2023.
