Northern section of the Poland-Lithuania gas interconnector nearing execution stage

GAZ-SYSTEM has concluded two agreements regarding the northern section of the Poland-Lithuania gas interconnector. One is related to investor’s supervision exercised over this portion of the project. The other was concluded by the Polish company with the contractor responsible for performing construction work on the northern section of the pipeline. All those achievements are an important step towards the construction of this important gas pipeline for Europe.

“This project aims to connect two transmission systems of Poland and Lithuania. The future objective is to integrate the gas markets of the Baltic States. The pipeline will also contribute to gasification of Poland’s north-eastern regions that have so far been deprived, almost entirely, of access to natural gas,” said Artur Zawartko, Vice President of GAZ-SYSTEM.

The agreement for construction work to be performed on the section between Kuków and the border of the Republic of Poland (approx. 47 km) has been signed by GAZ-SYSTEM with an international consortium led by the Polish company of JT S.A. The investor’s supervision over the entire length of the northern section shall be exercised by MGGP.

The northern section of the Poland-Lithuania Gas Interconnector is approx. 185 long and has the diameter of 700 mm. It will be located in two voivodships: Podlaskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie. It will span 5 poviats and 16 municipalities. Several accompanying structures will be erected under the project as well, as these are necessary for ensuring proper and safe operation of the infrastructure. The said structures include the so-called Block and Bleed Units (BBU) positioned every 20-30 km along the pipeline, as well as access roads and power grid connections.

The northern part of the Poland – Lithuania pipeline comprises three sections to be constructed as separate undertakings:

1) section 1 (approx. 61 km) located in Kolno and Grajewo poviats in Podlaskie voivodship;

2) section 2 (approx. 77 km) located in Grajewo and Suwałki poviats (Podlaskie voivodship) and in Ełk poviat (Warmińsko-Mazurskie voivodship);

3) section 3 (approx. 47 km) located in Suwałki and Sejny poviats in Podlaskie voivodship.

Preparatory work is in progress along the southern section of the Poland-Lithuania Gas Interconnector. Tendering procedures concerned with the selection of construction and installation companies are on-going as well.

The total value of EU subsidies for PLGI equals EUR 266.4 million (for both investors – GAZ-SYSTEM and Amber Grid, the Lithuanian transmission system operator), and financing is provided under the EU’s “Connecting Europe” facility.
