Orlen Wind 3, a subsidiary of the Orlen Group, has finalised a deal with EDP Renewables Polska to acquire two solar PV farms located in the Provinces of Zielona Góra and Poznań and a wind farm in the Province of Łódź. The newly acquired assets will increase Group’s renewable energy generation capacity by over 300 MW.
As a result of the transaction, Orlen Group has expanded its renewable energy capacity by nearly one-third. The Group now has approximately 580 MW of installed capacity in onshore wind farms and over 350 MW in solar PV projects.
The assets acquired from EDP Renewables Polska are among the most advanced of their kind and are expected to deliver up to 400 GWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power nearly 182,000 households.
The first solar PV farm, with a capacity of 40 MWp, located in Chotków in the Province of Zielona Góra, was launched in January this year. The second, situated in the Przykona municipality in the Province of Poznań, has a capacity of 200 MWp and is currently undergoing expansion by another 40 MWp, scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
These new assets represent another investment of the Orlen Group in renewable energy sources in the Wielkopolska region, where the Group already operates the Ujazd, Dobrzyca, Dominowo and Przykona wind farms, with a combined capacity of approximately 175 MW, as well as the 25 MW Gryf solar project. In addition to large-scale renewable energy projects, Orlen Group is also developing smaller installations to support its own infrastructure. This year, the Group’s asset portfolio was further expanded with the addition of a 3 MW solar PV system located at the Ostrów Wielkopolski fuel terminal. Furthermore, in the third quarter of 2023, the Orlen Group company Energa Wytwarzanie signed a preliminary agreement with Greenvolt for the Opalenica and Sompolno projects, with a total capacity of 58 MW. Simultaneously, construction work is ongoing on the Mitra (65 MW) and Żuki (2.4 MW) solar PV farms.
As part of the transaction with EDP Renewables Polska, the Orlen Group also acquired the Warta onshore wind farm, commissioned in May last year in the Łódź region. The 26 MW project is located in a high-wind area, ensuring optimum utilisation of the installed capacity.
By the close of this decade, Orlen Group targets an impressive 9 GW of installed renewable energy capacity. In addition to onshore wind and solar photovoltaic sources, it is actively spearheading developments in the offshore wind sector. In preparation for the offshore installation works, some critical components of the Baltic Power project are currently under production. In 2026, this JV project with Northland Power of Canada will contribute nearly 1.2 GW to the Polish power grid.
