PGNiG ready for the winter – gas storage facilities filled to capacity

As every year, before the start of the winter season, Polish Oil and Gas Company (PGNiG) has completely filled the capacity of underground gas storage facilities. The company is ready to increase demand for gas in the winter.

At the beginning of October, the storage capacities contracted under PGNiG agreements with Gas Storage Poland, the operator of the storage system were fully filled.

“During the spring and summer, when the consumption of natural gas in the country is lower, we inject significant volumes of natural gas into storage to make it available in autumn and winter. Gas reserves are used not only in connection with lower temperatures and the associated increase in gas consumption. They are also a guarantee of stability of gas fuel supply,” said Piotr Woźniak, President of the PGNiG Management Board.

Underground gas storage allows for balancing the demand for blue fuel. Thanks to the storage system PGNiG can effectively manage the natural gas portfolio. In July 2019, the average daily consumption in Poland was about 30 mcm. In February 2019 – it was on average approx. 60 mcm per day. The difference between gas consumption in summer and winter is therefore twice, however, it can fluctuate by several million cubic meters between consecutive days in a given month.

Currently, there are approx. 34.3 TWh, or approx. 3 bcm of natural gas in store (as of October 14, 2019).
