Poland lacks energy generation reserves. Operator acts in cooperation with neighbours

Polish electricity network operator Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne informed on 6th of December that due to low wind generation as well as unavailability of a number of thermal power plants due to forced outages and planned maintenance on 6 December 2021, difficulties in balancing the Polish power system were identified. Inadequacy concerned the inability to meet the required level of operational generation reserves.

Considering that the shortage of operational reserves was significant and in some hours exceeded 1000 MW, and further deterioration of balancing conditions could not be excluded, during operational planning procedures for December 6 PSE applied necessary remedial measures, including the use of inter-TSO emergency support power from neighboring systems: Lithuania, Sweden, Germany and Ukraine. The applied measures allowed for securing the system balance with the required levels of operational generation reserves – informs PSE.

We expect that on 7 December  2021 Polish operational reserves will also be tight. PSE is continuously analyzing the situation and will take all necessary measures to ensure the operational security of the Polish power system – we read in PSE statement.
