Poland closed April with 22.4 GW in renewable energy capacity

The Ministry of Climate and Environment has reported that at the end of April 2023, the installed capacity of RES in Poland amounted to 22.4 GW. This includes 8.6 GW in wind power and 13.4 GW in PV.

„The installed capacity of renewable energy sources was 24.4 GW at the end of April 2023,” said Adam Guibourgé-Chetwertyński, Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment, quoted by ISBnews.

„The systematic development of green energy is ensured through the introduction of a number of solutions that create a stable regulatory environment for investors. The result of the actions taken is an increase in the installed capacity of RES from approx. 7 GW in 2015 to 24.4 GW at the end of April 2023, including nearly 8.6 GW in wind farms and 13.4 GW in solar power plants,” the Deputy Minister wrote in a response to a question from an MP.

According to Guibourge-Chetwertyński, the strategy for the development of RES in Poland allows us to assume that in 2025 the installed capacity of RES will be at the level of approx. 27-28 GW.

PGE ranks 23rd

Poland’s largest energy company PGE was ranked 23rd on the Commodity Insights Top 250 Global Energy Company Ranking. The ranking uses the CAGR indicator, which sands for

„compound annual growth rate” and is used to calculate the average annual growth of a given volume over a given period, e.g. average growth in profits and values. S+P Global Commodity Insights examined the CAGR of energy companies over a three-year period: 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Finland’s Fortum, whose CAGR was 176 percent took the first place, while Poland’s PGE with an index of 26 percent landed on the 23rd position in the ranking. Two more Polish energy companies were included on the list: PGNiG (36) and Enea ( 39).

PGE President Wojciech Dąbrowski said that in the last year the company has made several key decisions and transactions that strengthen its position and development prospects on the market. „These decisions were dictated both by the desire to strengthen energy security and sovereignty, and by the consistent implementation of our business goals,” Dąbrowski said.

He mentioned, first of all, the initiation together with ZE PAK of a nuclear project in cooperation with the Korean KHNP, the acquisition of PKP Energetyka and the progress of offshore wind energy projects.

Orlen to acquire 266 gas stations in Austria

The Orlen Group has signed an agreement with Doppler Beteiligungs to buy 100% of shares in Doppler Energie GmbH, operator of the Austrian network of fuel stations operating under the Turmöl brand.

„Our gas stations are a showcase of Poland outside its borders. We are in the Czech, Hungarian and Slovak markets, and today we signed an agreement to acquire 266 stations in Austria under the Turmol brand, which is the third largest company in the retail market. This means that we are entering another market,” said Daniel Obajtek, President of Orlen.

„However, this is not the end, because we are planning further actions in Europe and we are not done with the acquisitions,” he added.

Orlen will take over 266 petrol stations in Austria. With the transaction, Orlen will begin its operations in a new retail market. The transaction is expected to take place at the turn of 2023 and 2024, after the conditions set out in the agreement, including obtaining the consent of the relevant antimonopoly offices, are met.
