Polish Briefing: Night fights for the RES amendment | Orlen plans a hydrogen hub with a 350 ton annual output

What goes on in Poland on the 29th of October.

Night fights for the RES amendment. Marek Suski fights distortions of the prosumer idea and gives prosumers time until April Fool’s Day to adjust to the new rules

The Sejm Committee on Energy, Climate and State Assets adopted with amendments the draft amendment to the RES Act where the discount system will be replaced by net billing by the end of March 2022, two months later than the original deadline. This will give the prosumers more time to adapt to the changes that Marek Suski dubbed as a “fight against distortions” of the prosumer idea. Discounts give a greater return on a PV investment than net billing. On the other hand, the new form of settlement is beneficial for power distributors, as it will limit the solar boom, and thus the burden on this infrastructure, which has still not been adapted to the new reality.

“In summer, the highest production is at noon, that’s when all air conditioners are on. Power plants cannot produce electricity then, because there is no water in the Vistula, and you claim that at this time there is the most electricity and that the network is clogged. This has to be properly organized. And you say: no, if there is electricity, cut it off. You will not produce, you will not earn. Let people earn a little,” the law was criticized by MP Mieczysław Kasprzak from the Polish People’s Party.

“The claim that we prevent Poles from building PV installations is a lie. This law does not forbid anything. This act only ensures that there will be no free storage of energy produced for profit. Storing energy involves losses, so the state would pay extra for it, and it would be about 40%, according to calculations by experts. The state will pay less, but it will continue to pay extra. Ladies and Gentlemen, these terms are good. Don’t worry, Poles can continue to install photovoltaics. It is still a profitable business, but the energy storage is not completely free,” Marek Suski reassured.

PKN Orlen is planning a hydrogen hub producing 350 tonnes of pure hydrogen per year

PKN Orlen plans to commission the first hydrogen hub in Poland this year. The installation capacity will be 350 tons of pure hydrogen annually.

PKN Orlen announced that the first hydrogen hub in Poland may be launched in 2021. “We plan to deliver the first hydrogen hub in Poland by the end of the year, with a capacity of 350 tons of pure hydrogen,” said Jan Szewczak, Orlen Chief Financial Officer.

“This is very important for the automotive industry, the world is increasingly looking at hydrogen as the fuel of the future,” he added during a recent press conference on the company’s results.
