Żbikowski: Nuclear energy from the USA for Poland from Bechtel?

Paweł Żbikowski, editor-in-chief of the portal Nuclear.pl, predicts that Poland can reach for American technology and contractors building the Polish nuclear power plant. Next week, Poland and USA will meet to talk on the support of the Polish nuclear program by the Americans.

In the opinion of Paweł Żbikowski, editor-in-chief of the nuclear.pl Portal, in the current situation the choice of Westinghouse Electric Company is the most probable. Since 2013 it has been building blocks 3 and 4 in EJ Vogtle near Waynesboro, Georgia, USA. These blocks are the first new nuclear units that have been built in the US for over 30 years. Due to Westinghouse’s financial problems since August 2017, Bechtel has been entrusted with the day-to-day management of construction works at the construction site of EJ Vogtle – we read in the Nuclear.pl portal.

According to Żbikowski, in the case of American involvement in the Polish Nuclear Power Program, it is Bechtel that should become the general contractor of the Polish investment. – Bechtel is the largest construction company in the United States and the most experienced in the nuclear industry – explains Żbikowski quoted by Nuclear.pl. In the 1960s and 1970s Bechtel was involved in the construction of 40 percent of nuclear power plants in the United States, later the company became involved in their servicing.

On June 12, Poland and the United States signed a memorandum of understaning in the field of civil nuclear energy use. This week, a meeting of Energy Secretary Rick Perry and the Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure Piotr Naimski is to be held to determine the area of cooperation and support for the US on the Polish nuclear program.
