Will Poland become a gas hub? Market consultations are underway

Poland wants to become a regional gas hub. The Ministry of Climate and Environment has started a wide-ranging sector consultation, which will last until January 15, 2021.

– Without an efficient and well-developed infrastructure, the implementation of the gas hub will not be possible. Poland is working intensively on the development of gas infrastructure, implementing, inter alia, such projects as: construction of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, expansion of the LNG terminal in Świnoujście and gas connections with Lithuania and Slovakia. Analyzes related to the expansion of the already existing connection with the Czech Republic are also ongoing. At the same time, in addition to projects of cross-border importance, Gaz-System is expanding the National Transmission System – said Michał Kurtyka, Minister of Climate and Environment.

The minister noted that Poland was working intensively on the development of gas infrastructure, implementing, inter alia, such projects as: construction of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, expansion of the LNG terminal in Świnoujście and gas connections with Lithuania and Slovakia.

The Ministry believes that the completion of these investments will not only guarantee the security of gas supplies, but also create opportunities for the further development of the gas sector, both domestically and cross-border. Minister Kurtyka emphasizes that diversification is a necessary condition to take full advantage of Poland’s geographical location to create a gas trading center for the region. But not the only one. – In order to create a hub, it is also necessary to have a wide product offer in the field of exchange and over-the-counter trade and a diversified portfolio of gas supplies. I appreciate the companies’ commitment to date in the process of diversifying gas supplies. Each of them has a designated place in the system and is responsible for a certain area enabling the creation of a hub – says Kurtyka.
