What goes on in Poland on the 9th of December.
Will Poland try to undermine the foundations of the EU climate policy to lower energy prices?
The Committee on Energy, Climate and State Assets of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland adopted a draft resolution of the Sejm calling for the suspension of the EU ETS emissions trading system in order to reduce rising energy prices. It will be voted on in the lower house on December 9.
„The Sejm of the Republic of Poland expressly supports the initiative of the Polish government to put forward a motion at the next meeting of the European Council for the immediate suspension of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) or excluding Poland from this system until it is reformed,” we read in the draft resolution on the call on European Union countries to suspend the EU ETS, and take measures for the reform adopted by the said committee.
„The Polish parliament is to pass resolutions so that the Polish prime minister, having behind him not only the government, but also the opposition, could fight for lower energy prices for Poles,” said MP Janusz Kowalski, author of the draft resolution. „The goal of the Polish government at the meeting of the European Council on December 16 is to establish the maximum price of CO2 emission allowances,” he added.
„This system has a speculative structure and causes a drain on funds,” the author of the project argued. „It is in our interest to reduce this tax,” he said. He recalled that the trade union Solidarność had come forward with a similar conclusion in the past. The agenda of the European Council meeting scheduled for 16 and 17 December, takes into account, among other things, the topic of energy prices in Europe, which are affected by record increases, which is caused, inter alia, by the rising price of CO2 emission allowances, which is approaching EUR 100 per ton.
