Nowadays, companies all over the world are increasingly aware of the need to take action for sustainable development. ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles are becoming a key element of the strategy of many companies that want to act responsibly towards the environment and society.
One such example is TAURON, one of the largest energy suppliers in Poland, which undertakes numerous initiatives in line with ESG principles. An example of such an initiative is TAURON’s cooperation with the sailing association Yacht Club Południe and Bytom’s scouts from the 1st Scouts Water Team named after Capt. Ż.w. Mamert Stankiewicz.
Key areas
ESG are three key areas that companies need to consider in order to operate in a responsible and sustainable manner. These three elements include:
1. E (Environmental): Focuses on protecting the environment, reducing emissions, managing natural resources efficiently and reducing impacts on climate change.
2. S (Social): Refers to the company’s social responsibility, including working conditions, equality, safety and support for local communities.
3. G (Governance): Deals with ethical management, transparency in operations, compliance with regulations and responsible decision-making.
The TAURON Group’s activities in support of sailing and water sports relate to all three elements of ESG, but the most relevant environmental and social aspects are discussed in more detail.
ESG principles
Sailing, by the very nature of its character, is a sport closely linked to nature, especially to water and wind, two natural resources. By supporting sailing initiatives, TAURON is in practice promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. Water, a key element of the sport, needs to be properly protected, something that young people taking part in programmes supported by the company are learning.
One of the key environmental aspects associated with sailing is to take care of the cleanliness of the waters where regattas and other sporting events take place. Young people participating in the regatta sailing programme learn about the importance of keeping the waters clean and how to take care of the surrounding nature.
In the context of energy activities, the promotion of sailing fits in with the philosophy of sustainable development, where clean energy sources become the foundation of the future. Such initiatives provide a practical example of how the natural forces of nature can be harnessed while caring for the environment.
Supporting young people in their development through sailing is also a social aspect that fits in with the ESG principles. By engaging in such activities, the company invests in the future of young people, providing them with educational opportunities that not only enhance their sporting skills, but also develop environmental and social awareness.
1st Scout Water Team
Through its cooperation with the Yacht Club South and the scouts from the 1st Scout Water Team, the TAURON Group promotes environmental education in practice. Young people participating in regattas and other events have the opportunity to learn how to care for the environment, how to minimise the impact of human activity on nature and the importance of protecting natural resources.
TAURON Group’s activities to support sailing are also an investment in the local community. By cooperating with local sports clubs, the company helps to develop young talent and support initiatives that strengthen social ties. Young people participating in the programmes have the chance to develop their skills in a safe and supportive environment, which in turn translates into their personal and social development.
Investing in such initiatives allows companies to build stronger relationships with local communities and contributes to creating a better, more sustainable world. In this way, TAURON not only achieves its business objectives, but also cares for the future of the next generations, which is a fundamental element of the social and environmental responsibility strategy of any modern company.
