Hermes Energy Group withdrew from the fight for access to Baltic Pipe’s capacity. The pipeline will transmit gas from the Norwegian Continental Shelf to Poland. According to the company, the Act on Mandatory Stocks of Fossil Fuels makes it impossible for Hermes to participate in the project.
In an interview with BiznesAlert.pl, Tomasz Stępień Gaz-System’s President of the Management Board talks about the progress of the Baltic Pipe project. He believes that the positive result of the first stage of the open season procedure means the project will enter a fast track and will be completed in 2022.
„The Phase I of the Open Season 2017 for the Baltic Pipe project has showed the interest in realization of the Baltic Pipe Project and confirmed the sufficient demand for gas transportation from the North Sea through Denmark and the Baltic Sea to Poland,” announced Gaz-System in a press release.
„In reality the perspective of building offshore farms in Poland is quire remote. Even if the government includes them in the energy mix, electricity from the Baltic will be available no sooner than at the beginning of the next decade,” writes Teresa Wójcik, editor at BiznesAlert.pl
On 6 June Gaz-System and Energinet.dk will start an open season procedure for the Baltic Pipeline. The gas pipeline is one of the elements of the Northern Gateway, which could connect Poland with Norway’s gas deposits, and thus offer Central and Eastern Europe a potentially economically attractive alternative to Russian gas.
The Northern Gateway project pursued by the Polish gas transmission operator Gaz-System, is a key undertaking for the Polish gas market.
