Dip in energy use, rise in renewables lowers German CO2 emissions
Germany’s energy consumption fell by one percent in the first half of 2018 as warm weather in the spring reduced the need for heating. A rise in renewable energy generation that pushed out coal in the power sector also helped to cut energy-related CO2 emissions by around three percent, data from the energy market research group AG Energiebilanzen showed. The current heat wave, however, could push the share of electricity generation from brown coal (lignite) plants up, as nuclear and hard coal plants have to scale back production due to the effects of the heat.
Why does Poland import more resources from Russia?
„Rzeczpospolita” reports that Poland is buying more and more coal, gas and oil from Russia. It is worth looking at the reasons for this. This is not the triumph of Vladimir Putin, because some changes are unstoppable. However, some of them should happen faster – writes Wojciech Jakóbik, editor-in-chief of BiznesAlert.pl.

PGNiG: Poland buys less gas from Russia and more LNG
In relation to media releases shared by Gazprom, PGNiG informs that the growth of imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) contracted from Qatar, Norway and the USA, was tenfold higher than the growth of imports of natural gas from Russia. Compared to purchases of gas from Russia, a rise in LNG imports was also greater in terms of volume.
Western sanctions: Little impact to Russia’s oil and gas sector
It is expected that Western restrictions, imposed on Russia by the United States and the European Union after the annexation of Crimea, will become troublesome for the state’s economy only in a few years. The Russians are currently managing all resources they have at their disposals; in addition, they have been also maximally exploiting the existing infrastructure. President Vladimir Putin is aware of any dangers caused due to such long-term cut-off of Russian business from Western technologies. So this issue will certainly constitute one of the main themes of his closer relations with the U.S. President Donald Trump after the Helsinki summit. In this respect, the most urgent problem is the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project.
100 percent of the energy in the stock market will slow, but not stop the price increase
The Ministry of Energy will propose a draft legislative amendment introducing 100 percent of the exchange obligation for electricity, excluding cogeneration and energy from renewable sources. – This decision may slow down the increase in energy prices, but it will not stop it – said Joanna Maćkowiak-Pandera, president of the Energy Forum, talking to BiznesAlert.pl.

PISM: Prospects for Cooperation between NATO and Ukraine
During the Brussels summit, NATO expressed its readiness to develop cooperation with Ukraine, but this will be dependent on domestic reforms in that country. At present, progress in this respect is not sufficient to allow Ukraine to deepen its relations with the Alliance. The Ukrainian authorities should continue introducing changes in the security and defence sector and extend the interoperability of the Ukrainian and NATO armed forces – writes Daniel Szeligowski, analyst at the Polish Institute of International Affairs (PISM).
