Energy Union: Commission takes steps to extend common EU gas rules to import pipelines

To improve the functioning of the EU internal energy market and enhance solidarity between Member States, the Commission today proposed to amend the EU Gas Directive. It includes common rules for gas pipelines entering the European internal gas market, which can help to stop the Nord Stream 2 project.

Minister of Energy: Decommissioning of the Ignalina NPP is in the interest of the EU

The provision of funding after 2020 for the decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was discussed at a meeting on the 2nd of November between Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas and European Commissioner for Budget and Human Resources Günther Oettinger. This is necessary in order to ensure that operation of the nuclear power plant – which houses two of the most powerful reactors in the world – is concluded in a safe and timely manner.

Orlen’s Benzina has reached 400 petrol stations in Czech Republic

Benzina, the largest network of petrol stations in the Czech Republic owned by the Unipetrol Group, opened the 400th petrol station thus further strengthened its leading position on the market. The growth in the number of stations is closely associated with the OMV petrol stations’ takeover. Of the 65 acquired stations, 54 stations have been already taken over. The acquisition process will be completed in the first quarter of 2018. Benzina is also heavily investing in expanding and improving the quality of services. In addition to introducing new fuels, EFECTA 95 and EFECTA Diesel, it aims to unify the visual image of its stations, expand the complementary range of items and services offered as well as to modernise the Stop Cafe refreshment shops including staff training.

Ros: Poland can make gasoline from coal

The oil crisis in 1973 gave a new start to coal liquefaction, a process of converting coal to liquid fuel. The coal liquefaction industry had earlier lost its competitiveness to oil industry after WWII. In the 90s the efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions drastically decreased the interest in coal liquefaction. The reason is that about two units of coal are needed to generate enough heat for converting one unit of coal to one unit of fuel. This means that the produced liquid fuel give rise to about three times higher emission of carbon dioxide than fuel from refined crude oil – writes Mikael Ros.
